when the right words just came to me...
AND ALL MY FINER FEELINGS
So, I'm sitting here on my couch in the living room at 12:30ish AM. I just got done studying for a stats final. I can't sleep because I'm stressed, anxious, etc. about my statistics final. I keep thinking about probabilities:
the probability that I will do good on my final is medium
the probability that I will go to bed soon is low
the probability that I will ever learn how to cook is VERY low
the probability that I will go to BYU is looking high right now
the probability that I will work out this week is high
the probability that I will get sick this week is medium
Life is centered, of course around the gospel and family...but if you think about it, life is also centered around predictions. We can make predictions about our future from our history...People die from this world and enter this world on a daily basis--we know this because we have facts and STATISTICS to prove this. So, I can make probable predictions about the future based on the past. I predict one day I will die. Because of this statistical knowledge I have, I surely know that this can be a tool to making me very succesful one day. I predict one day I will die after leading a successful life.
Let's now take into consideration the stock market...looking at the history of the stock market, we can conclude that the stock market has grown considerably. However, after constructing a confidence interval I am 95% confident that the stock market will stay pretty much the same for a long time until the second coming and then it will crash. Everything will crash then...seriously the second coming will be the crash of all crashes, the tragedy of all tragedies, the hope of all hopes. To quote the beloved Charles Dickens, it will be "the best of times and the worst of times." Apparently the movie says this crash will happen in 2012??
Anyways, back to probability....lets talk about probability in the dating aspect of life. I'm going to be quite blunt here, so take it or leave it-the probablity a beautiful girl will get asked out by a guy is very high-the probability that an ugly girl (that is the blunt part) will be asked about a guy is very low...Those are valid probabilities and you know there are most likely many studies that would support this null hypothesis.
There is probabilty in marriage. The probability that your husband will do something when you ask him right then and there is low (this probability is centered around the typical couple who has been married for many years)...ponder about this once again people of America-because of history we have the ability to make probable predictions for the future. How great is that?
Scientifically wise, because of the facts we get from those little machines in space, the weather man can predict the weather for tomorrow. We can predict what species will be endangered within the next 10 years...wow. We can predict when the next meteor shower will be.
Thinking within entertainment...there have probably been tests done to predict when Disney will come out with a new pixar animated film.
Probability is a significant aspect in life. It is a key tool that as humans we can utilize into our everyday lives. (From just writing those first two sentences, I feel as though I'm ending a talk with my testimony...weird). It can help us make smart everyday choices in life whether big, small, life-changing, or not life-changing. with With this tool you can make smart choices money wise therefore, end up making more money. Just compute the mean, find the z-score, margin of errors, run a couple probability tests, etc and you could become $10,000 richer...you could be bringing home more bacon to your family.
So, am I grateful for taking "intro to statistics" otherwise known as math 1040? You bet your bottom dollar I am.
